Hot, hot, hot!

Wow. While it would be nice to say that everything is picture perfect at the Raymond Homestead – which would be the ultimate excuse for not posting in forever – things are….well, they’re not falling apart, but they’re far from perfect.

Saturday was a bit hectic. With everything going on lately, we just haven’t been able to get to splitting up the wood until now. While last year we did about 80% of it by hand, we came to the decision that this year we might not be able to. Hubster really wore himself out last year of on the massive rounds that called for the “sledge and wedge” treatment. So we made a decision: We rented a log splitter from the local TrueValue and hammered out about a cord or so of split wood. Hubster’s mom – GiGi – was able to come over and watch Little Mister once he woke up so that Hubster and I could go out and work as a couple on the wood. This is something that we’ve rarely had the chance to do since someone’s been up and running on his two legs. It was wonderful being able to work together.

Sunday saw the death of our 9 year old washer, which at the time contained a full load of water and laundry. Thankfully Hubster was able to come in from doing something – I can’t remember what – and fought with the thing to get it to drain. We’ve been debating for the past year or so about getting a new control knob as it had been flaky for a while now. Now we’re glad we held off since the motor died on it. That would have been a bit of a waste of money, for sure. Needless to say, we lucked out. The in-laws still had the washer that came with the house that they bought from us and weren’t using it. Now we have a working washer. It doesn’t have a “quick wash” setting, and it’s not energy efficiency rated, but it’s better than nothing.

Tuesday the car had to go in for rear shocks and a sticker. It passed, which I wasn’t to surprised about, and we were able to figure out how to get it back despite the sweltering heat that is just too much for the pup and the boy. Unfortunately the car still needs tires. But, that will come later. They’re still legal right now and holding air.

On top of this all, we’ve now been working on staking the split wood as it dries. The past two mornings what little exercise I’ve been getting this week has been half hour spurts of stacking wood out in 90F heat. Now, I’m not complaining, mind you. I’m just pointing out that sometimes the reason why those of us with a homestead don’t get time to do certain things that we want to – or need to – is because of recuperating time that we need to take for ourselves. Too many people forget this and over do it. I guess the only point of this last paragraph of this random post is more of a PSA: PLEASE take it easy in the heat. Yes, do work. But do it slow. Take your time. Reset.

Snap-Shot Cleaning: Master Bedroom

So, for the most part, this snapshot is only on “my” side of the bedroom, since it was the messiest and I try not to pester the hubby’s hobbies if I can get away with it.

Master Bedroom Before

Master Bedrrom After

While it might not look like much through the photo, the following took place during those 45 long minutes:

 • Finished folding and put away three loads of laundry
 • Placed all work clothes on hangers and into closet
 • Organized book shelf (not in photo)
 • Picked up cat toys (not in photo)
 • Picked up dog toys (not in photo)
 • Dusted my night stand, vanity, dresser, book cases, and the rocker
 • Organized nightstand
 • Organized dresser
 • Organized vanity

I probably could have been more productive with my time had it not been for Belle wanting to play ball and then the closet door practically falling off the slider.

Aside from snap-shot cleaning, I have done a ton of other chores today:

 • Swept the stairs, entry way, and kitchen
 • Cleaned the cat box (this is daily)
 • Spot cleaned the entry way and kitchen floor
 • Taken care of the dishes
 • Hung two loads of wash
 • Picked up in the living room
 • Posted in this blog twice (now three times)
 • Posted in my personal blog
 • Written three responses for homework
 • Finished four rows on a knitting project

I’m hoping, before the husband gets home, to finish the following:

 • Paper work for deferment
 • Paper work for homestead exemption
 • Fold last load of laundry (in the dryer right now)
 • Vacuum living room and bedrooms
 • Change Teeny’s cage
 • Change Jacks’ cage
 • Shovel front door yard and enough of Belle’s run to make her happy
 • Make dinner
 • Begin (and possibly finish) sewing pile
 • Begin sewing project
 • Finish homework for this week

With all that needs doing and getting done, I love the fact that I’m a self motivated person. It’s hard to comprehend those that don’t put their all into keeping house. Granted, I call myself a “Wife” with a capital W for a reason! Happy cleaning, all! I’m off to finish my list.

Updates

Well, I noticed that we haven’t done much here in the way of updates, and for that I apologize. Things have been a little hectic with the wedding, post-wedding aftermath, winterizing, Samhain, and everything else that tends to crop up during this time of year. Not to mention that just yesterday we had to have roughly $600.00 worth of work done to the furnace. Not sure how we’ll pay that yet, but we’ll get there.

In more personal news, I have decided to go back to school this spring for my Master’s. I love that Joe is behind me 100% on this. I can’t help but feel from trepidation over it all, since it ment leaving my steady and predictable job of Title I ed. tech. to become a substitute teacher for two districts (and I might have to pick up a third if I can’t get the ball rolling on freelance writing).

However, I do have to say that it’s been nice being able to get stuff done around the house and to be able to cook again, meaning less money spent on food. Now, with the holidays of Yule and Christmas coming up, it’ll be even nicer that I can put time into making gifts this year. I think I might even throw caution to the wind and make something for Mom, Dad, and Peter. (There’s a personal paranoia there that they won’t appreciate the homemade gifts.)

In the animal kingdom, Belle (border collie) and Ashes (Maine coon cat) are starting to get along very well. Belle’s even tried to initiate playtime with Ashes, who in turn just looks at her as if she’s lost her marbles. Unfortunately, Ashes has gained a lot of weight since going to the all-natural food, so we’ve had to swap him back to the IAMS Weight Loss formula. Hopefully that and more exercise can trim him back down. Given the heart problems that Maine coon cats are susceptible to, carrying extra weight isn’t really a good thing for him.

Well, we decided to start a family blog sometime ago andhere it finally is. I don’t know how far we’ll go with it, or what precisely will be written in it, but we’ll see.

First off, let me state how surreal it feels to be coming up on owning our own home for a year. It didn’t really dawn on me until I recieved a form in the mail from the mortgage company asking for a renewal statement from our insurance office because of upcoming expiration date. It doesn’t seem like it’s been that long, but in other ways, it seems a bit longer. We still haven’t done as much to the house as we hoped we would, due to finances and all that. However, it’s coming along nicely.

This spring did bring the suprise of another additon to the wildlife that we’ve been expereincing around here. We ended up with a min-flock of turkeys in our yard. (One tom and two hens.)

They’ve come back a couple differnent times. Unfortunately, since Maine has a turkey hunting season, we might not see them for a while. As long as they stay safe, I’ll be happy.

Along with the current round of planting taking up our time, we’re working on finishing up the back shed, beginning to take a front shed down, adopting a dog, and temporarily taking care of a stray cat that really would rather be in our house than in the front yard. (If anyone wants a cat, let me know!)

Things have been moving along work wise as well. The school year’s ending, which means I’m once more on the prowl for a full-time teaching position instead of an hourly educational technician spot. Joe on the other hand was just offered a wonderful position, but I’ll let him tell that story later on if he wants. Or, if he decides to let me be the maine updater, I might just explain it all a bit more in my next post.

Well, I know this is a bit of a short post, but there’s so much that needs doing now that the weather’s warm enough. I’m hoping to at least update in here once a week, but we’ll see.
